Dave Kitchen is the head coach and owner of CrossFit North Vancouver. In 2007, he discovered his passion for CrossFit, while teaching Krav Maga. The studio decided to add a CrossFit program to their schedule, as a way to supplement their workouts. It was then that Dave realized that his calling in life was to coach CrossFit. In 2010, Dave was presented with the opportunity to buy out the studio and he jumped at the chance. Shortly after, CFNV was born. Dave is a devoted family man, always spending time with his wife, 2 daughters and 2 fur children. He can often be found spending weekends at his cabin in Paradise Lakes with the family. Sally started coaching at CFNV in 2007, after training our head coach, Dave Kitchen in Krav Maga. Sally quickly fell in love with the CFNV community and has become an integral member of our team. She is our resident mama bear, always looking after everyone and making sure they are moving with proper technique. Sally trains regularly and can be found coaching classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She is an outstanding motivator and supportive coach and is genuinely excited when she sees CFNV athletes hit new PR’s or achieve new goals. She is a warm, positive individual, with a knack for making everyone in the gym feel welcome and at home. Coach Roe, Roe Roe, Cheetah, however you know her you know she is a gem. Roe joined the team at CFNV in January 2010 and has been a large part of our community ever since. She is an extremely attentive, knowledgeable coach, and is passionate about helping our members achieve their fitness goals. Roe is also a strong competitive athlete, having competed at the regional level. She has plenty of knowledge to share and if you join her for one of her classes you are guaranteed to laugh a lot and enjoy a great workout at the same time. Ryan Jarvis is our resident DJ, spinning the best tunes to keep the dance floor bumping at our Christmas parties. He has also been a floor announcer at 4 CrossFit Games Regional Competitions and 2 CrossFit Games in Madison. On top of being a master with the mic, he has been coaching at CFNV since 2014. When it comes to his coaching style, Ryan is all about pushing the limit and trying to get our athletes to go the extra mile and empty their tanks during workouts. If you join him at one of his classes, you will get a killer workout, paired with the best music to keep you moving.
Pete aka “Pistol” joined CrossFit North Vancouver in 2010 when we were still based out of our original location in the Dollarton Village. Pete and his wife, Phyllis, quickly became pillars of our community and have been an integral part of our growth ever since they first stepped foot in the gym. He is a certified teacher and has taken on the role of head coach of our Kids and Teens program. He is passionate about teaching and loves helping people move better and become better athletes. If you have a kid or teen who is looking for a fun, active after school activity, make sure you bring them by our CrossFit Kids program to work out with Coach Pistol!
Mike joined CFNV in 2013 and has been an avid member from day one. We were excited when he showed interested in becoming a CrossFit coach and joined our coaches’ roster in 2017. If you join Mike for one of his classes, you will discover he loves loud music and knows how to get people moving. He is also great with kids and a master story teller, often going beyond the call of duty to ensure parents and the entire class can get in a great workout. If you love to sweat, then his class is for you. Mike, we love having you as a member of the team at CFNV!
Corey came to CFNV in 2008 with his wife Kristin and the two of them have been an integral part of our community ever since. He is a member of our “Original Crew” and was one of our first coaches, moving with us from our previous location. Corey quickly discovered a love for CrossFit and its high intensity, constantly varied workouts. He has competed at the regional level and in a number of community events, so he is no stranger to working out under pressure. He loves the colour pink and can often be found wearing an epic laser kitty t-shirt. As a former model and tech nerd, Corey brings the perfect combination of entertainment and experience to his classes. Join him on Saturdays and Sundays for his Hero WOD’s and you are guaranteed a sweaty good time.
Before joining us as a coach, James already had plenty of experience as a trainer working mainly with kettlebells. His love of fitness brought him to CrossFit and his knowledge and experience was just an added bonus! As a triathlete James already knew a lot about disciplined training and hard work but since discovering CrossFit he has enjoyed the extra bonus of working out in a community of like-minded people. He is a dedicated coach and family man and you will often see him hanging around the gym with his son Benjamin. He loves working out and coaching, so make sure you come train with him! Michael Nash is one of our newest coaches, joining us in April of 2017 after making the move to North Vancouver from New Zealand. He is no stranger to CrossFit, having been training for the last 6 years. His passion for CrossFit and functional movement turned into a career as a trainer and body worker. He also heads up our Pound Club program with his other half, Coach Lisa Lethbridge. Join him in one of his classes and you will find a knowledgeable coach who ensures you have fun – just don’t show up late, or you will have to do some burpees! Lastly, if he says hi to your dog before he says hi to you, don’t be offended, he’s just a dog whisperer.
Coach Lisa is our resident heavy lifter, also known as “Lisa Lifts”. She is dedicated and passionate about powerlifting and CrossFit and shares her love of fitness with each and every single one of our members. She moved to North Vancouver from New Zealand in 2017 and quickly made herself at home. She heads up our Pound Club program, with her other half, Michael Nash, and together they help people “Be Strong and Move Strong”. Since moving to the North Shore, she has fully embraced the lifestyle – hiking, mountain biking, you name it, she does it! And remember, if you ever want to win her affection, just bring her ice cream and you’ll have a friend for life.
Sam came to our box in 2013, eager to start training. He excelled quickly, earning the nickname “Wonder Boy”. Sam took his passion for health and fitness to the next level by pursuing an education in Health Sciences, recently graduating from UBC with a Bachelor of Kinesiology. Sam coaches both our adult and kids/teens programs and has the knowledge and experience to work with a diverse range of athletes. Chat to him one on one and you are sure to receive some sage advice and tips for improving your technique. Make sure you come join him for one of his classes because he may be headed off to pursue a medical degree in the near future!
Phyllis joined CrossFit in 2010, with her husband Pete. She fell in love with CrossFit almost instantly and quickly excelled, competing in a number of competitions, including Taranis, the Open and the CrossFit Regionals. Phyllis is an athlete by nature, she won the Squamish Test of Metal for her age category twice and she plays soccer and softball on a regular basis. She is also an avid surfer and explorer, taking off on adventures with her family every summer. No matter what workout is thrown her way, Phyllis can always be found with a smile on her face. She is bubbly and energetic. These traits, paired with her teaching certification, made her the perfect addition to our CrossFit Kids coaches roster. We love having her on the CFNV team.
Alex Stonkus was originally introduced to CFNV in 2010, when he and his brother Matt came to do a workout for their fundraiser CrossFitters for a Cure. The two brothers were travelling across Canada and visiting CrossFit gyms to raise money for Alzheimers. When we found out they were moving to North Vancouver, we knew we had to have them as part of the CFNV community. Alex is no stranger to competition, having taken part in Taranis competitions and numerous CrossFit events back in Ontario. He has also been nationally ranked for Olympic Weightlifting – so if you need any tips, be sure to ask him. In his spare time, Alex is often found tasting beers at the local brewery or hiking quarry rock. He is also partial to potato chips, so if you ever need anything from him, just show up with a bag of sour cream and onion and you will win him over.
In 2012, Chris became part of the CrossFit North Vancouver coaching staff and quickly made his presence known. Working with Dave, the programming for the gym became more challenging but at the same time the attention to the individual needs of the athletes was never left behind. Combining the skills of a coach who truly cares about the improvements of his athletes and the leadership of someone who has personally competed at a high level, Chris brings it all to the table each and every week. John Hooper is one of our newest CrossFit Coaches, working through our apprenticing program. He is a fitness fanatic, competing in Ironman competitions and taking on the Knee Knacker trail run in North Vancouver. After being the fitness coach for his coworkers one summer, he realized his passion for coaching. He wanted to keep coaching and help others discover a love for working out. One of his favourite things about CFNV is the community of people.
Guy is one of our newest coaches, currently working through our apprenticeship program with Dave. When he first started CrossFit, he was looking for an avenue to take his fitness to the next level and was eager to compete. After spending some time at the gym, he realized how important it is to have a well-rounded skill set and wanted to expand his knowledge of movement. This thirst for knowledge and improvement made him realize he wanted to become a coach and we couldn’t be happier. Guy is personable, kind and wants to share his passion for fitness with our community. Come join him for one of his classes.
Nikki joined CrossFit North Vancouver in 2008, after returning home from a 6 month trip around the world. She hadn’t stepped foot in a gym once while away and decided CrossFit was the way to get back into shape. She grew up playing soccer and softball, so she was looking for a way to have that feeling of comradery while also getting in a really good workout. Nikki quickly felt at home at CFNV and in early 2017 she joined our staff, helping out with our social media and admin duties. You will often find her hanging out behind the front desk, or taking pictures of our members on the training floor. She is an avid sun chaser and loves walking the seawall in the summertime and often escapes to Sayulita in the winter. If you need anything, reach out to her, she’s happy to help!
