The team will be on their way to Portland later today to check in for the West Regional! The events kick off tomorrow morning and we can’t wait to watch team CFNV compete. This whole week leading up to the competition we have been posting the individual team members thoughts on making it to this point. Next up are our final two competitors, Sarah Wall and Jessica Kalynn, here’s what they had to say:
How does it feel to have made it to regionals this year?
Jess: Crazy. I can’t wait to be down there cheering on the team through the events!
Sarah: So so so good! And so exciting, incredibly exciting! It’s my first time competing at regionals, I’m a newbie and really looking forward to going there.
What was the hardest part of the open?
Jess: For me, the hardest part of the open was staying sane and not taking it too seriously. I’m not anywhere close to a regionals level athlete but I can be a bit too competitive sometimes, so throughout the open I kept reminding myself to keep my head on straight and try to have fun!
Sarah: Staying in a positive headspace when some of the workouts were really difficult or weren’t my strong suit. I had also been dealing with being sick throughout the open, so it was tough to keep pushing through – I had to constantly remind myself to stay positive.
What was the most rewarding part of the open?
Sarah: Doing well in the muscle up workout and finishing all the workouts! This year, I was able to do all of the required movements in the workouts, as opposed to other years when I couldn’t complete everything. It was nice to see the improvements over the years.
Jess: Cheering on the classes! I remember on one of the heavy snatch workouts I almost got teary as everyone stopped what they were doing to cheer on the remaining two girls. The team spirit was breathtaking.
What events are you looking forward too and which ones do you wish you could avoid?
Jess: I’m most looking forward to watching the worm events as I have seen the time and ingenuity everyone on the team has put in to trying to replicate the worm with wallballs, bags, and ropes in preparation, and I am excited to see their efforts pay off!
Sarah: The worm because I have enjoyed working with the team through it. I like all of the team workouts and I’m curious to see how well we communicate under stress and pressure! The workout I am least looking forward to is the wall ball, muscle up event because heavy wall balls are just not fun and muscle ups are not super either.
What does it mean to you to represent CFNV?
Jess: It is an incredible honour, this gym is my second home and you are all my family!
Sarah: I feel really proud to represent CFNV. I feel like a part of a community because it hasn’t just been me coming in and doing the workouts alone. We made it to this point because we all worked together, we are a team. Everyone in the gym has been so supportive so it feels really good to go to regionals knowing we have a whole community behind us. I feel immense support from everyone at the gym and know our community will be proud no matter what.
Any words of advice or encouragement for CFNV members who are considering competing next year?
Jess: Just do it! You will amaze yourself with what you can accomplish when under the gun.
Sarah: If you want to compete just do it. Do your best and have fun with it, that’s the most important thing. If you’re not having fun then there is no point. Just keep working consistently, not only on your strengths but also your weakness. Embrace your weakness and turn them into strengths, don’t hide from them.
Once again, good luck to all our competitors! You have the support of our entire community behind you and we are so proud of everything you have accomplished. Remember to have fun this weekend and really take in the experience. We can’t wait to see your hard work pay off!
