As previously announced, CrossFit North Vancouver has earned a spot to compete at the 2017 West Regional! We are incredibly excited to take part in this event and can’t wait to show you all what the CFNV team is made of. The competition takes place on the weekend of June 2nd, at the Portland Expo Centre. We hope some of you can make it out to Portland to support your CFNV team.
As many of you know, CFNV did not get to attend the regionals last year, so it made this year’s placement so much sweeter. The head coaches, Dave and Chris, wanted to share with all of you what it means to represent CFNV at regionals, what it took to make it this year, as well as some words of encouragement for the team who will be competing.
How does it feel to make it this year?
Dave: It feels a little bit shocking to a degree, it surprised us. We thought the curve of the games was increasing at a higher rate than we were. It’s pretty cool to know that we are still amongst the top gyms that can make it to regionals.
Chris: It was definitely a surprise, but a welcome one. We weren’t expecting to make it this year, we were more focused on making it in 2018. It’s slightly bitter sweet because there are a number of people with commitments that week that can’t go, myself included. But it is exciting to know our efforts in the gym paid off this year.
What does it mean to represent CFNV at regionals?
Dave: It means a victory! The coolest part about making regionals is that we are a gym made up of real people. Our athletes have careers and kids, they work 9 to 5 jobs and often have to travel. No one in our gym is a full time athlete, unlike many of the gyms we will be competing against. Our athletes train when they can and when it works in their schedule. It is an amazing feat that everyone puts so much effort in outside their regular life.
Making regionals also validates the programming, the community support and the efforts of the athletes and coaches. We are back to our tradition, we made it every year before last and being back on the regionals roster this year is a great place to be.
What did it take to get to this point after just missing out on regionals last year?
Chris: When we looked at the scores last year, we came to the conclusion that our athlete’s strength was really good but other areas needed to be improved. The gymnastics skills and conditioning were the two parts that needed the most work. So this last year, leading up to the Open, our athletes spent a lot less time doing extra weightlifting work and focused more on trying to improve things like muscle ups and handstand push ups. We also worked on improving their conditioning as well.
Did the programming change?
Chris: It wasn’t so much a change in programming but more so a shift in priorities and making sure weaknesses were being addressed. Some people took it upon themselves to put more hours in, which was inspiring to see.
Was there a shift in the athletes, bigger drive to make it this year?
Chris: Actually, no, it was kind of the opposite. We weren’t really shooting or driving to make it this year, we were focused on improving in order to make it in 2018. Our athletes were more focused on doing well themselves this year, and we happened to make it as a team. This likely worked in our favour, as people were more relaxed going into the workouts this year and they weren’t as stressed because there wasn’t as much pressure.
While we weren’t expecting to make it, we are still very excited that we have the opportunity to compete this year and keep improving!
Any words of wisdom/encouragement for the team?
Dave: For 99 percent of people the regionals events is the CrossFit games, so go embrace it and have fun. Use this opportunity as a way to showcase your fitness in front of a bunch of people. This is what you have worked for, go out and enjoy it!
Also, remember, everyone here at CFNV is supporting you and behind you 100 percent.
Chris: More than anything, really make sure that you enjoy the experience of preparing for regionals and the experience being at regionals. It’s always going to get tougher and tougher to be in the top group of athletes who make it this far; it’s definitely not a given or to be expected like it used to be.
Really take in the moment and enjoy it and remember you earned this.
The members of the team going to regionals has not yet been finalized but we will update you all once we know who will be competing. In the meantime, we wanted to send out a big thank you to everyone who competed in the open and to everyone who showed up to cheer on and judge the athletes. You all made us very proud and showed us what CFNV can do. This is exactly what we are all about and we are so grateful for our CrossFit community!
