In June 2013 Ian had just finished having a couple of beers at Bridge Brewing with a friend and wandered in to CFNV. “Terry (Bull) had finished coaching and answered a few of my questions. I started on foundations the next week!”
With a straightforward goal of wanting to get into better shape Ian quickly found what he was looking for with Crossfit. “I was running on treadmills and doing light weights at the community rec center, but had reached a plateau, and workouts were boring!” Having played basketball in college he has had an active lifestyle but Crossfit has taken him to new levels. “I’ve been in good physical shape before in my life – however, I’m probably as fit, and certainly stronger, than I’ve ever been.”
Beyond the physical benefits Ian has found more, “I’ve learned that the intensity of Crossfit workouts forces you to have a mental break / distraction from life stresses (work, etc.). Another reason why I’m hooked…”
Whenever Dave or Pete arrives to open the gym for the first class of the day they will usually find Ian already there waiting. Ian is always ready for the challenge each day brings and finds plenty of inspiration with the whole CFNV community, “in particular, the 6am crew. It takes a lot of mental fortitude (craziness) to get up at that hour, lift heavy, and then push yourself to the max on a WOD. Most of all, love hearing someone in the 6am class ring the PR bell!”
Ian enjoys being challenged by his fellow athletes and had his best Crossfit moment in the 2015 Open when he qualified in the top 200 from around the world in the 45-49 age category. He has competed now both as an individual and a team member and is looking forward to competing in a Masters competition.
Outside of the gym he enjoys “spending time with family and friends – either over a beer / wine, or skiing (or après ski!). And fishing.” Ian has played basketball, volleyball, and mountain biking previously and currently enjoys skiing whenever he can.
When asked to share some details about himself that people likely wouldn’t know he answered. “I drank beers with Wayne Gretzky (Kokanee – his choice!) and speed skated with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (Justin’s Dad!). I spent almost 10 years working / volunteering to solve some of the challenges in Vancouver’s downtown eastside (before I had kids). I was a university professor for 1 semester, but wasn’t invited back. In my early 30s I was one of the Vancouver Sun’s “most eligible bachelors” because the columnist was a friend of mine and she thought it would improve my chances. And I hate dried fruit.”
Early bird gets the worm! Not many people will equal this guys dedication. First to the gym every morning and ready to go! Ian is an integral part of the 25ish people who make up the “6am Crew”. A true leader and example to all. Come out and meet him at the Christmas Party. At least then you will know the guy you chase every day!! 😉
