In just over a year Jill has gone from Crossfit newbie to competitor. In September 2014 her friend Michelle Hoodless, who was already a CFNV member, introduced her to Crossfit. Once she started it didn’t take long for Crossfit to become a big part of her life.
Jill’s goals when she started were to have a fitness routine that she wouldn’t get bored with and to get stronger and be able to do pull-ups. Those goals are still in play “because you can always add more weight, or move faster. I definitely want to do butterfly pull-ups.” Training frequently works well for her, “I find the more I move my body the less sore I am. I train for the physical benefits but also I feel better mentally.”
Strength and cardio conditioning have both improved since she began and she has enjoyed the challenge of testing both in competitions. Her first time competing was at Festivus then last summer at the Confederation Cup and Crossfit BC Summer Challenge and most recently on the CFNV affiliate league team. “I would love to see more scaled and intermediate competitions locally. It’s a great way to test yourself. I love that everyone always supports each other even the people you’re competing against.”
“I love that there are so many people of all shapes and sizes and ages who can workout together. Everyone inspires me; they all have a story to why they are there. Some are doing it just to get fit, other’s are trying to be the best in the world.”
Jill has always been active and involved at different times with figure skating, skiing, basketball, volleyball and running. Currently she doesn’t play any other sports but “I’ll go in a running race is someone convinces me.”
When asked what might surprise people to know about her, Jill replied, “I’m not that competitive!! Haha…just kidding!! I’m actually a bit of an introvert and don’t like to be the center of attention.”
Coaches Comments
Well, well, well. It would be really fun to say something cheeky because Jill can always find something cheeky to say, but, I will save it because I fear the “Killer”. In all seriousness – She’s full of fun, but very focused on her goals and willing to put in the work to achieve them. It’s been a pleasure the past year to watch her grow and become a big part of our community at CFNV.
