When did you start CrossFit?
Why did you start CrossFit?
I actually didn’t even sign up to try it. One day I got a call from Dave that I won a Free Trial package from the Deep Cove Days event. It was funny because I didn’t even sign up to win a Free Trial nor was I ever at Deep Cove Days. I later found out that Matt Stonkus and Alex Stonkus signed me up for it. I had taken them to run up the Grouse Grind for the first time the week prior so maybe it was payback. The rest was history.
What did you do before CrossFit?
I taught and practiced Capoeira (Brazilian Martial Art) for 9 years. Before that I trained and taught Boxing competitively at the Steveston Boxing club for 5 years and even before that I played basketball all throughout my youth.
What do you do outside of CrossFit?
I still play basketball, keep up my Capoeira on my own, and eat Calamari wherever I go. I also work as an anti-bullying workshop speaker. I travel to all the high schools in the lower mainland challenging guys to “to be a good men” teaching them to use “assertiveness” as a powerful alternative to violence and have dialogue about healthy relationships. I also work in North Vancouver supporting immigrant youth/all youth in the community through workshops in High School on anti-oppression and empowerment.

I started coaching after I got my Level 1 Certification in March 2012
What is your favorite thing about CrossFit?
Community, Challenge and Camrederie.
What is your favorite WOD, why?
My favourite WOD is the Nutts Her0 WOD because it involves something I am good at (HSPU) and something I am not as good at (Deadlifts) and whole bunch of crazy things in between. Most importantly, because of the importance of the workout as it relates to the fallen Canadian Soldier Lt. Andrew Nuttall. Every time I do the workout, It’s always a great reminder of how we are blessed every day to be alive and healthy and are so lucky that our greatest battle is the workout for the day at that moment.
What is your favorite thing about Coaching?
My favourite part about coaching is seeing people every day fail, get better and stronger and then succeed. I also love the moment I realize that I know every single person in the room by their first name (or nickname) and I will probably see them all again tomorrow.
What is your favorite CrossFit moment?
My favourite moment in CrossFit so far is losing the final workout at the Taranis Winter Challenge 2012 with the whole CFNV family behind us watching. I felt really defeated when we lost but as soon as our team went back to sit in the stands, a whole bleacher full of family and friends gave us an even bigger standing ovation for support. From this moment, I understood that it wasn’t about winning, but about trying your hardest and community.
