The first workout is over and the enthusiasm in the gym has been incredible. From brand new Crossfitters to seasoned competitors there has been outstanding focus and commitment to being the best they can be. But it doesn’t stop at the people who have signed up and are competing in the Open. The support and encouragement from the rest of our community has been great.
The first workout was a combination of workout 1 & 2 from last year’s Open. If you made it through to the end you would have completed 100 burpees and 90 snatches. No small feat for anyone last year over two events but this year to combine them was nasty. Lets face it the point of this workout was to wear you out with the burpees to see if your technique would pull you through on the snatches. I know my own technique faltered as the snatches got heavy and I was left with muscling through them. But its competition and we learn that when it gets tough you have to bear down and do what you need to in order to get through it. It also became obvious that pacing was going to play a big role in this workout. We have to address our pace all the time in the daily workouts and this was no different. Steady, consistent work got the job done.
Friday night was incredible in the gym as our athletes took their turn at workout 13.1. They came and gave it their best shot. Then Sunday afternoon there were several more in to get their turn completed before the 5:00 PM deadline, plus a couple of athletes looking to improve their score who were ready to do it again.
Now it’s done and scored on the Crossfit leaderboard and our gym is well represented with many athletes scoring high in their age division. If you look on the Crossfit website and check the leaderboard you can see how they have done and you can compare their scores for either worldwide or Canada West. After the first round we have some noteworthy performances with Coach Pistol, Trigger, Coach Mustang, Diva, Pippi, Hulk, along with Mama T and Coach Bull.
Each and every one of our athletes competing in the Open should be proud of themselves. They are all putting themselves on the competition floor and representing our gym. I know I am extremely proud of them all. The Open has just started and there will be plenty more to cheer about over the next month.
